Aberfeldy 12

  • Nose: Honey, toffee, vanilla, pear.
  • Palate: Caramel, apple, citrus.
  • Finish: Spicy oak, roasted nuts.

The nose is subtle and sweet with hints of honey and caramel up-front, followed by vanilla and pear.

On the palate, the Aberfeldy 12 displays a creamy body providing a good mouthfeel. Flavor is sweet and rich in caramel, with hints of apple, citrus and a fair amount of oak spice bringing balance to the sweetness.

There is a tiny tad of smoke that is barely noticeable.

The finish has a decent length, with a bit of a bite, but nothing extreme, with some oak spice to it and a roasted nuts hint.

Aberfeldy will not blow you away with strong flavors, remarkable and memorable tasting notes and is not something to get too excited over but it’s nevertheless an enjoyable dram; its price makes it interesting.

Overall, Aberfeldy 12 is a good introductory bottle to single malt whisky, it’s reasonably pricedwell rounded with nothing outstanding yet nothing off-putting.

The best way of drinking the Aberfeldy is by adding a few drops of water, just a splash of water is enough to open-up the whisky releasing nice aromas while tuning-down warmth and spicy notes.

It offers an approachable flavor profile that stacks up well with better-known brands.

  • Bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).

  • Aberfeldy Distillery was founded by the John Dewar & Sons, Ltd. in 1896, is located on the eastern outskirts of Aberfeldy.

  • Aberfeldy is a Highland Whisky. This region offers an enormous diversity of flavors and characters. From lighter whiskies all the way through salty coastal malts.

Tomatin 12

  • Nose: Raisin, almond
  • Palate: Vanilla, oak, mint, ginger, citrus.
  • Finish: Lingering spicy oak finish.

The nose is quite nice as it’s rich in raisin and almond with no heat.

On the palate, the Tomatin provides a good body as it feels somewhat creamy. Flavor hits with vanilla and oak spice at first, followed by a note of mint, ginger and citrus.

The finish is medium to long, with little warmth to it, although it becomes bitter from the oak spice.

Adding water releases a bit more sweetness while tuning down the oak spice making it more approachable.

After a promising nose, the Tomatin takes a downturn on every step of the way as the finish is not good as it becomes bitter, although it can be remedied with water.

Not a bad whisky, but not good to be honest with several better malts at your disposal.

Price makes it alluring but I still pass on it.

Tomatin is a Highland Scotch founded in 1897 and in 1986 became the first Scottish Distillery to be acquired by a Japanese conglomerate (Takara Holdings).

There are a few facts worth knowing about Tomatin:

  • Bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV).

  • Aged in traditional Bourbon barrels before being transferred to Oloroso sherry casks for around 6-9 months.

  • Both are good basic entry-level Scotch single malts from the Highlands and attractively priced but the Aberfeldy is a better tasting malt.

  • Aberfeldy has nothing neither remarkable nor bad, is well rounded, but it is an enjoyable pour with enough warmth to make it entirely drinkable.

  • The Tomatin is quite affordable but it lets you down with a bitter finish.
