Port Charlotte 10 has a fruity nose, rich in smoke that reminds of mesquite, along brine, caramel and vanilla.

The body is a thick layer of peaty smoke and once you get through you find sweetness on the middle and hints of apple and vanilla.

The finish is long, peaty with a peppery hint and lingering sweetness making it quite pleasant.

This whisky is incredibly smooth for something at 100 proof (50% ABV) and extremely well balanced for those who appreciate a powerful dose of peat smoke in their Scotch.

Overall, Port Charlotte 10 is absolutely delicious, smooth, peaty and creamy and ranks quite high among its very competitive category.

If you feel it warm and too peaty add a dash of water, just a few drops are enough to make the Port Charlotte more fruity and sweeter and easier to sip. Pair it with a big Cuban cigar to enjoy it to the fullest.

What do Ardbeg and Port Charlotte have in common?

These malts have two things in common worth mentioning:

  • These whiskies are NOT chill-filtered. Chill filtering prevents the liquor from becoming hazy when in the bottle, when served, when chilled, or when water or ice is added, as well as precluding sedimentation from occurring in the bottles.

  • Many distillers and die-hard aficionados don’t like chill-filtering because according to them some molecules which contribute to the flavor and mouthfeel are also filtered out in the process.

  • Neither Ardbeg, nor Port Charlotte contain caramel-coloring to look more appealing. The United Kingdom’s Scotch Whisky Regulations allows this practice but some purists frown-upon the idea of adding artificial colors to the whisky.
