Bulleit Bourbon is famous for its spicy character and its Rye sibling takes the spice to the next level by carrying 95% rye grain in the mash; Rye grain gives liquor a strong spicy note.

Nose has a soft minty note, followed by cedar wood, vanilla and rye spice.

Palate offers a blast of rye spiciness at first, followed by spearmint hints, caramel and a touch of vanilla.

The finish has a medium to long length, pleasantly warm, with more mint and a tad of charred oak.

Solid dram as there is nothing off-putting about it, just a good and cheap rye whiskey.

Bulleit hits you with the rich spicy notes you expect to find in this type of whiskey, but overall this is a sweet and smooth whiskey and quite easy to sip.

If you feel it too spicy add large ice cubes avoiding dilution; that will make it easier to sip.

Where this whiskey shines is in cocktails as the rich spice presence will add a nice kick to your favorite mix.

Overall, Bulleit Rye is a solid option, it won’t blow you away with any memorable tasting note but makes a good alternative for those looking for a “rye whiskey high in rye“ to make whiskey mixed drinks.

The Bulleit works well with a dash of Coke and even when mixed with weird things like Energy Drinks making it quite versatile.

Most rye whiskeys in the market are “barely legal”; as they only carry around 51% in the mash while the Bulleit carries 95% so you get a full spicy experience.

There are a few facts worth knowing about Bulleit Rye:

  • It does not carry an age statement but it is aged between five to six years in heavily charred, new American oak casks.
  • Earned the Double Gold and Gold Medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
  • This whiskey is not crafted by Bulleit as it’s sourced at MGP of Indiana where several other Rye Whiskeys are crafted (Templeton Rye, Whistlepig, Angel’s Envy).
  • Bulleit is owned by London-based Diageo along other 200 brands including Johnnie Walker.

The nose has the typical artificial banana note of Jack Daniel’s, along mint, caramel, vanilla and a bit of medicinal alcohol.

On the palate, the Jack Rye is surprisingly smooth, low in rye spice, is round and malty, with some coffee roast, oak, caramel and the mint note typical of rye whiskey.

The finish is smooth, with very little to no burn, with a faint peppery note.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the Jack Daniel’s Rye, I was not expecting much from it but it turns out to be a nice sipper that goes down nicely despite bottled at 90 proof.

It’s quite smooth, unexpectedly complex and entirely drinkable.

It drinks nicely on the rocks, although I feel it lacks the heat to make tasty cocktails as I like stronger whiskeys to make cocktails.

The Jack Daniel’s Rye is better than the regular and attractively priced making a good option.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Jack Daniel’s Rye:

  • Mash bill is comprised of 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley.
  • It does not have an age statement but is aged between 4 and 5 years.
  • The Jack Daniel’s Rye goes through the same charcoal-filtering process as the No. 7 which takes from 3 to 5 days to get completed.

  • The Bulleit is full of the signature notes of rye whiskey as it is made at the same distillery where most rye whiskeys are made.
  • Smooth, tasty, with a rich spicy profile making a great option to make flavorful cocktails. Those notes make the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan better.
  • Jack Daniel’s is quite smooth making an easy drinker that can be sipped with ice but lacks the punch to make tasty cocktails.
