The nose is heavy on banana, along caramel and vanilla, with just a whiff of ethanol coming behind.

On the palate, the Smoke Wagon shows a good texture, first sip offers a rye spice blast, followed by vanilla, caramel, a touch of orange peel and some of the banana note you get on the nose.

The finish has a medium length, with pleasant warmth to it, leaving an aftertaste of burnt marshmallow, an earthy note and more rye spice.

The Smoke Wagon is a bourbon high in Rye and it shows on the palate and the finish as you can feel the rye spice but is not overwhelming.

It drinks like a polished version of the Bulleit Bourbon which is also high in rye.

This release is bottled at 100 proof that does not feel as such as it has very little warmth making an easy sipper and a good choice for those who want a non-burny bottled at high proof and spicy sip.

This is not a bourbon I would use to make cocktails as it lacks the warmth to make a punchy cocktail. I’d rather use a cheap rye whiskey for a tasty Old Fashioned.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Smoke Wagon:

  • It doesn’t have an age statement.
  • Mash bill is comprised of 60% Corn, 36% Rye, 4% Malted Barley.
  • Crafted at the MGP of Indiana Distillery along several other whiskeys such as the Bulleit Rye, Templeton Rye, George Dickel Rye among others.
  • Bottled and aged in Las Vegas making it the only bourbon from this city.
  • Smoke Wagon was created by screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh met co-founder Aaron Chepenik.
  • Three-time winner of a Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Nose is sweet, reminding me of a Crème Brûlée. There are notes of vanilla, honey and burnt sugar. There is also a banana note but not as high as in the Small Batch.

On the palate, the Smoke Wagon Uncut provides a creamy mouthfeel. It has moderate heat and tastes sweet with hints of cherry, rye spice and banana.

The finish has a medium to long length, with notes of vanilla, old leather, baking spice and a tad of rye spice.

Drinks nicely neat, although adding a dash of water tunes down the heat while bringing more cinnamon and toasted oak.

Smoke Wagon Uncut and Unfiltered is the same bourbon as the Small Batch but was not diluted with water before bottling.

The result is a whiskey with many of tasting notes in common but more tasty although a bit warmer yet entirely drinkable.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered:

  • It doesn’t have an age statement.
  • Mash bill is comprised of 60% Corn, 36% Rye, 4% Malted Barley.
  • Neither diluted nor filtered before bottling.

  • When a whisky is diluted and filtered you lose some of the tasting notes as it’s basically a watered-down dram.
  • Consequently, the Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered is a more tasty bourbon, with more body and still quite easy to drink despite the additional proof making a very good high-rye bourbon.
  • If you feel the heat add some water to it and little by little you will grow accustomed to it.
