On the palate, taste is overly thin with a watery body. Taste is quite subtle with hints of vanilla and caramel and a touch of oak spice.
The finish is minuscule, with vanilla and caramel hints, along oak spice and no heat!
This bourbon is entirely easy to drink, with almost no warmth. It’s nearly flavorless but no bad notes either!! making it easy to drink neat.
A bad mixer, though, as it lacks the punch to deliver flavorful cocktails.
Nothing remarkable but for the price certainly not bad as most liquors in this price range taste like acetone.
This bourbon is produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery, along some of the best bourbons on the planet. The Benchmark is made using the same mash bill as the Buffalo Trace although bottled at lower-proof.

- This bourbon’s full name is McAfee’s Benchmark Old No. 8.
- The McAfee brothers, named James, George and Robert left Virginia westward to explore what today is Kentucky.
- Crafted at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, KY.
- Nose: Vanilla, oak, caramel, apple juice.
- Palate: Oak, vanilla, pepper, clove.
- Finish: Pepper, oak spice, vanilla.
The nose is soft, with an aroma that brings an apple juice hint, along vanilla, caramel and oak.
On the palate, the Old Crow feels watered-down with very little body. First sip is warm, delivering a sharp oak spice blast, followed by peppery notes, a touch of clove and roasted peanuts.
There is very little sweetness in the taste as oak spice and pepper overwhelm vanilla and caramel notes.
The finish is short and burny, with an unpleasant combination of rye and oak spice making it a bad sipping bourbon.
The Old Crow is not good, as opposed to other bottom-shelf bourbons that can be sipped neat the Crow is just too bitter, peppery and bitey.
You can make cocktails with it or use it as prank, but this is definitely a poor option despite it’s low price providing no value.
It tastes like rocket fuel making one of the worst bourbons in the market; if not the worst.
