Chivas Regal 18

chivas-18
  • Nose: Apple, vanilla, pear
  • Palate: Ripe fruit, oak, vanilla, plum
  • Finish: Long, vanilla, apple, oak
  • Alcohol content: 80 proof (40% ABV)
  • How to drink: Rocks
  • Similar to: Johnnie Walker 18

Taste:

Nose is mild with the apple juice aroma of every Chivas Regal Scotch, along vanilla and pear.

Flavor hits with ripe fruity, vanilla, plum and subtle oak. There is a bit of warmth mid-palate but is not harsh or too burny.

The finish lingers with vanilla, apple and a touch of oak spice with a bit of a bite coming late to the party.

Is it good?

Overall, the Chivas 18 is well balanced, not particularly complex, but an easy drinker where nothing really stands out, although a bit warmer than expected.

This is a vast improvement over the traditional Chivas 12 which has the same apple juice flavor but more peppery and bit sour.

Drinks OK neat, but becomes better when adding a drop of water. I would not use it as a mixer when you can use the 12 YO saving your hard earned money.

Chivas 18 facts:

  • This whisky is not a single malt but a blend of 20 single malt whiskies, each aged for at least 18 years.
  • Chivas assures that the core spirit in the blend is single malt Scotch coming from the Strathisla distillery, which was established in 1786 and is the oldest working distillery in the Scottish Highlands.
  • The Wine Enthusiast called the Chivas 18 “one of the finest blended scotches in the world”.
  • The whisky expert Paul Pacult called it: “blended scotch doesn’t get any better than this.”

Dewar’s 18

Dewars-18-Scotch-Whisky
  • Nose: Fresh bread, cherries, orange, baking spice
  • Palate: Oak, sour apples, ripe fruit, peat
  • Finish: Short, smoke, oak spice
  • Alcohol content: 80 proof (40% ABV)
  • How to drink: Add water
  • Similar to: Johnnie Walker Platinum

Taste:

The nose is amazing as it hits with a Christmas Cake scent that brings hints of fresh bread, cherries, orange and a drizzle of baking spice.

On the palate, the 18 YO provides a somewhat thin body. First sip fails to deliver the Christmas Cake of the nose as it provides a musty oak taste and sour apples up-front with a little of ripe fruit coming behind.

There is a faint touch of peat present in the taste; very subtle, though.

The finish is short-lived, with a tiny whiff of smoke to it and and oak spice bitterness.

Is it good?

Not terrible but NOT something I would recommend buying.

It kicks-off with a nice Christmas Cake scent that doesn’t follow through on the taste where you mostly get musty oak and sour apples.

The finish is quite short, with very little warmth, though, but completely unremarkable.

Looks affordable at first glance but you can definitely get much better whiskies under $50 in the United States such as the Johnnie Walker Green Label or the Highland Park 12.

Dewar’s 18 facts:

  • This is a blend of single malt and grain whiskies coming from 5 different distilleries owned by Dewar’s.
  • Aged in American oak before being blended and refilled into an oak vat.
  • Dewar’s is owned by Bermuda-based Bacardi.

Which is the difference between Chivas 18 and Dewar’s 18?

Both whiskies are blends but the Chivas is a blend comprised of exclusively Single Malt Whiskies while the Dewar’s blends grain and malt whiskies.

Value
  • After a fantastic nose the Dewar’s 18 falls apart delivering a so-so taste and an unremarkable finish.
  • Little value for the money when you have much better whiskies at your disposal at the same price range.
  • The Chivas 18 is competent, not going to blow you away with outstanding notes, yet an upgrade over the traditional 12 YO.
  • Add ice to it as it gets better chilled.
