Taste:

The nose is quite aromatic, rich in toffee and honey, along a soft hint of apple.

On the palate, the GlenDronach has a creamy feel as the body feels thick.

Flavor delivers caramel and vanilla up-front, followed by a rich dried fruit note.

The finish is long with very little warmth to it, leaving an aftertaste of oak, dried fruity and sherry behind.

Is it good?

The GlenDronach ages for a dozen using in a combination of Oloroso, a variety of fortified wine, and Pedro Ximenez, a velvety and sweet sherry wine from Spain, casks.

This combination of casks is what gives the GlenDronach the strong Sherry wine presence and the nutty and sweet flavor.

GlenDronach 12 drinks beautifully making one of the best 12 year malts making a great choice for sherry whisky enthusiasts.

No harshness or off-putting notes and a tasty profile makes it entirely satisfying.

Taste:

The nose is warm and rich, with a strong hint of raisins, followed by caramel, vanilla and a whiff of oak.

On the palate, Lasanta has a solid creamy texture and a smooth taste providing a great mouthfeel. Flavor is rich in dried fruit, along vanilla, baking spice and oak.

The finish has a good length, with very little warmth, more dried fruit to it, along oak spice and baking spice.

Is it good?

This whisky was first aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon barrels and you can tell as it shows notes common to bourbon.

Just that it provides a solid dried fruit note product of aging for 2 years in Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez butts.

These sweet and delicious sherry wines from Spain are what make Glenmorangie so tasty.

This is a very nice dram. Ideal for bourbon lovers curious about sherried whiskies as many of the flavors of this malt will make bells ring.

Glenmorangie Lasanta facts:

  • Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2010 and 2013.
  • Lasanta means “warmth and passion” in Gaelic.
  • The distillery was established in 1843 although there are records of distilling taking place in that same location in 1703.
  • Glenmorangie’s stills are equipped with relatively small boiler pots, which increases the exposure of the spirit to the copper, resulting in a creamy texture.
  • The stills are seventeen feet tall, the tallest of any distillery in Scotland which according to them produces a refined whisky.

  • There is not better as they are both top-ranked within the 12 year Single Malt category, although they serve different type of aficionados.
  • I prefer the GlenDronach as it hits with a nice balance of sherry and baking spice making it quite satisfying.
  • Bourbon drinkers could well be better served with the Glenmorangie as the years spent in whiskey barrels will provide familiar tasting notes with added sherry notes making it a better deal than your typical bourbon.
