The Glenfiddich 12 is a clean and sweet whisky, nothing complex, nothing great but nothing off-putting, is just a smooth and mellow fruity dram.

Overall, Glenfiddich 12 is a basic release and due to its affordable price and signature smoothness serves as the entry-level bottle to the world of single malt whisky.

Glenfiddich 12 has been the entry-level bottle to the fantastic world of single malt whisky for many people including me and for a good reason: Glenfiddich is a solid, smooth and yet affordable single malt.

Glenfiddich 12 facts:

  • Is aged for a dozen years in a combination of used American oak and European sherry oak casks.
  • Glenfiddich has been in business since Christmas Day 1887 when William Grant founded the distillery.

The nose has a strong apple juice scent, with a touch of vanilla, lemon and a whiff of alcohol.

On the palate, Chivas 12 feels light, with not much body lacking in texture. Flavor has more of the apple juice, with a touch of caramel and hints of green apple, cinnamon and a strong peppery note coming late.

The finish is short, peppery and somewhat bitter, with a bit more of apple that remains constant from start to finish.

Is it good?

Chivas 12 is not the best sipping whisky. There is nothing terribly bad about it, although there is a bit more pepper and bitter notes that I’m willing to take in a sipper.

Where this whisky shines is in a Highball cocktails as those peppery note add a nice kick to this cocktail. Its price allows room for experimentation.

If you are new to Scotch whisky you are likely to find It harsh, hence I suggest to look into easier drams such as the Monkey Shoulder, the Glenlivet 12 or the Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve.

Chivas 12 facts:

  • This whisky is a blend of grain and malt whiskies crafted in an undisclosed number of distilleries across Scotland.
  • Each one of the whiskies in the blend was aged for at least 12 years before bottling.
  • Chivas is not a single malt but a blend of several whiskies crafted in different locations across Scotland.

Glenfiddich 12 vs Chivas Regal 12: which is better?

Glenfiddich is a smoother and sweeter sipping whisky than Chivas Regal

  • Glenfiddich 12 is a better whisky than the Chivas Regal 12 for consumers looking for a pour to be served either neat or rocks. The Glen is a smooth and mellow dram making an easy sip.
  • Glenfiddich 12 is an attractively priced single malt making a good entry-level bottle to the fantastic world of single malt whisky.
  • Chivas Regal 12 is a better mixer Glenfiddich 12, as it mixes nicely in any cocktail of your liking and the price makes it more attractive for those affairs. I always discourage consumers from mixing single malts, I see no point in drowning in fruity juices an expensive Scotch.

Differences between Glenfiddich and Chivas Regal

These whiskies belong to different categories due to their production methods:

  • Glenfiddich is a single malt Scotch, to be considered a single malt the whisky has to be made exclusively from malted barley, at a single distillery and aged for at least 3 years (Glenfiddich was aged for 12) in oak barrels and bottled at a minimum of 80 proof.
  • Chivas Regal is made from a blend of malt and grain whiskies from various distilleries across Scotland each matured for at least 12 years.

As a general rule single malt whiskies tend to be smoother than blends as grains make spirits a bit harsh. Malted barley is also more expensive, it remains being the most expensive major grain crop for a second consecutive season. Now you know why single malts are pricey!
