Nose is rich in old leather, with hints of vanilla and cherry and a bit of ethanol.

On the palate, Old Grand Dad has a nice oily texture. Flavor is bold as it does not hide the 114 proof.

As you let it develop it becomes sweet, with a nice cherry note, caramel and citrus with a tad of cinnamon.

The eternal peanut note of every whiskey crafted at the Jim Beam Distillery is present.

The finish is long and warm, with hints of oak and rye spice.

Old Grand 114 feels warm and adding water does little for it as it remains hot and somewhat peppery.

Not the best sipper but its warm and spicy character make it a good option to make a tasty Old Fashioned without spending much as this bourbon is nicely priced.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Grand Old Dad 114:

  • Aged for 4 years.
  • Mash bill is made from 63% corn, 27% rye and 10% malted barley.
  • The man in the label is Basil Hayden. He’s the one that came up with the idea of adding rye to bourbon’s mash.

Nose is mostly sweet, with hints of vanilla, caramel and peaches; there is a tiny scent of ethanol.

On the palate, Old Grand Dad Bonded kicks-off with a strong flavor of oak, cinnamon and rye spice, that mellows into caramel sweetness, roasted peanuts and a dash of black pepper.

The finish has a moderate length, is rich in oak, along baking and rye spice.

Old Grand Dad Bonded has some warmth to it but not as much as you would expect from a bourbon at 100 proof.

It drinks nicely neat although a drop or two of water releases additional sweetness while tuning-down some of the rye spice.

Certainly nothing extraordinary, not very complex, but an easy sipper for the price providing great value for the money.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Old Grand Dad Bonded:

  • Aged for at least 4 years under government supervision.
  • Distilled in the same calendar year.
  • Mash bill is made from 63% corn, 27% rye and 10% malted barley.
  • Old Grand Dad is crafted at the Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, KY along Booker’s, Knob Creek, Basil Hayden’s, Old Crow, Baker’s and a few others.

What’s the difference between Old Grand 114 and Bonded?

They are both made from the same mash bill and aged for 4 years. The difference lies in the proof.

Old Grand Dad was bottled at barrel proof, meaning, without diluting it with water prior to bottling while the Old Grand Bonded is a spirit bottled in Bond.

To be labeled bottled in bond, a whiskey must be the product of a single distiller in a single season, aged for a minimum of 4 years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV).

Old Grand Dad 114 vs Old Grand Bonded: Which is Better?

Bonded is an easier drinker

  • Bonded is better rounded than 114 that is just a little too warm to make a good sipper.
  • Old Grand Bonded is surprisingly smooth for a 100 proof bourbon making it versatile as you can sip it neat, rocks or in cocktails.
  • Old Grand 114 makes a great mixer for tasty cocktails but not something you want to sip neat as it lets you feel the burn.

The Grand Old Dads provide good value for the money, making them a solid option in these uncertain times!
