Stagg is one of the many brands crafted at the Buffalo Trace Distillery. Stagg uses the same mash as the Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare but is drawn from a single barrel and bottled at proof.

The nose has a strong vanilla and cherry pie aroma that you can smell from across the room.

On the palate, Stagg Jr. has a thick and chewy texture and is strong and warm up-front. Once you let it develop it’s rich in cherry, cinnamon and baking spice with a touch of pecan.

The finish is warming but not harsh, rich in oak, with lingering fine spice hints and brown sugar.

Stagg Jr is incredibly tasty, bold and rich although it has a fair amount of heat but well restrained for something bottled at such high proof.

This is a one of a kind bourbon for the brave with a penchant for strong and full of character spirits.

If you feel the burn add a large ice ball and that will tune it down a beat while releasing additional sweetness and wood.

This bourbon makes a great alternative to Blanton’s and something well worth looking at.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Stagg Jr.

  • Typically aged from 8 to 9 years.
  • This bourbon is uncut as it was not diluted with water and unfiltered.
  • The distiller releases two batches annually.
  • This bourbon is called Stagg Jr as it’s the less mature version of George T. Stagg.

Weller 12

Nose is faint and sweet, with hints of brown sugar, vanilla, baking spice and oak.

On the palate, Weller 12 provides a creamy texture, is rich in vanilla, caramel, cherry and a bit of oak.

The finish is short-lived and smooth, with very little to no heat and rich in vanilla, caramel and oak.

Weller 12 (Similar Bourbons) is an easy drinker, smooth, with a buttery feel to it. The finish is disheartening as it is quite brief.

A few drops of water add a touch of spice in the front making it more tasty but do nothing for the finish.

In summary, not a bad whiskey but not what you expect from a pour at this price point making me consider other options.

There are a few facts worth knowing about Weller 12:

  • Aged for 12 years in new, charred American Oak barrels.
  • Earned Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Stagg Jr vs Weller 12: Which is better?

Stagg is a more satisfying bourbon from nose to finish

  • Stagg Jr. is way better than the Weller 12 that is good until the finish which is a major bummer as it’s remarkably short and uninteresting making it terribly overpriced.
  • The Stagg is not for the faint at heart as it drinks warm but not harsh by any means.
  • Stagg Jr. is quite tasty, rich and bold but can easily be tamed by adding a dash of water or a large ice ball.
  • The creamy texture keeps you coming back for more adding points to the Stagg making it a clear winner over the Weller 12.
  • Within Weller there are better alternatives such as the Antique 107 which is a champ in terms of value.
