On the nose, Woodford Malt is subtle with sweet hints of molasses, chocolate and a faint malty note.

On the palate, this whiskey shows a good texture as the body feels somewhat creamy. Flavor is mostly sweet, rich in malt, along notes of vanilla, chocolate, brown sugar and dark fruit.

The finish has a moderate length, leaving an aftertaste of oak, with a bit of spice. It feels a bit warm on the way down but nothing off-putting.

Woodford Malt is not a bourbon but a whiskey since its mash bill does not have a minimum of 51% corn. It’s mostly made using malted barley but does not bring flavors associated with Scotch whisky.

It tastes more like a traditional bourbon as it still has the typical vanilla, fruity and oaky notes of bourbon.

I summarize by saying, this is a nice tasting “bourbon” with a touch of malted barley. Neither complex nor particularly interesting but a good whiskey to try every now and then.

There is a bit of heat to it on the finish. Not overpowering nor off-putting but a somewhat hot finish.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Woodford Reserve Malt:

  • Made from a mash bill of 51% malted barley, 47% corn, and 2% rye.
  • It does not have an age statement.
  • Crafted at the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, KY.

On the nose, the traditional Woodford Reserve oaky note comes first, followed by hints of bread and cinnamon-dusted apples.

On the palate, Woodford Wheat displays a good creamy texture. Flavor is sweet, with a strong hint of cherry, brioche bread, brown sugar, baking spice and just a bit of oak spice.

The finish is dry, with very little warmth to it. There is a lingering cinnamon and apple aftertaste along more oak and spice.

As opposed to wheated bourbons such as Maker’s Mark, Weller or Larceny that only carry around less than 20% of wheat grain in the mash, the Woodford Wheat is loaded with wheat as it carries 52%.

This provides strong bread-like hints to the whiskey making it particularly interesting, although is not neither mind blowing nor earth shattering.

The finish is quite dry, more than in any other Woodford release, so you better keep that in mind before purchasing it.

The Woodford Wheat goes down very smooth, with a nice lingering note of vanilla and apples. Drinks nicely neat or rocks, with very little warmth to it making it a good sipper.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Woodford Reserve Wheat:

  • Made using a mash comprised of 52% wheat, 20% malt, 20% corn and 8% rye.
  • It does not have an age statement.
  • Woodford Reserve is owned by Brown Forman who also holds Jack Daniel’s, Old Forester among other brands such as Herradura Tequila.
