1792 is not the year in which this distillery was founded but when Kentucky was recognized as a state.

Buffalo Trace owns 1792 Bourbon but is crafted at its own distillery in Barton.

The nose is rich in burnt oak, banana with a light touch of green apple and rye spice. It comes together to be somewhat earthy and creamy as you let it sit on the glass.

Palate is smooth with hints of cinnamon moving across the mouth before gradually intensifying and being joined by bitter dry oak notes.

There are notes of banana and ripe fruit, but they are immediately overwhelmed by the spice leaving this dram a bit one dimensional and fairly unbalanced.

The finish has a medium-length with a lingering cinnamon spiciness and dry oak and is a bit warm but nothing off-putting.

1792 Small Batch is a little forgettable perhaps, yet easy to drink without thinking about it. It has a few nice tasting notes, but out of balance and not quite developed.

The Four Roses Small Batch nicely balances sweet and spicy flavors coming from rye and is packed with enjoyable hints. Creamy and smooth with just the right amount of spice making a great sipper.

There is no need to add ice or a drop of water to tune it down as it goes down with no harshness.

If you have already tried the Four Roses Yellow Label you will find the Small Batch to be a vast improvement.

It is more tasty and smoother while still providing great value for the money and a satisfying daily drinker.

There are a few facts worth knowing about Four Roses:

  • Made from a blend of four different Kentucky bourbons. Two of the bourbons are made from of a mash of 60% corn, 35% rye and 5% malted barley, while the other two bourbons are comprised of a mash of 75% corn, 20% rye and 5% malted barley. The high rye content is what provides the rich spicy note.
  • Each of the bourbons is fermented with a unique, proprietary yeast culture providing a different flavor to the whiskeys in the blend.

  • Both bourbons hit with rye spice as they have similar mash bills, yet the Four Roses provides a better balanced bourbon that drinks quite nicely neat or when adding ice.
  • The 1792 Small Batch is not bad, just that it’s quite unremarkable and forgettable as it tastes generic.

What is a small batch bourbon?

Small Batch Bourbon typically consists of no more than ten selected single barrels, although the number of barrels varies from distiller to distiller. There is no difference in the production process but made on a smaller scale.

TBH, the word has become a bit meaningless as I see an abundance of Small Batch offerings in the market.
