If you have already tried the Ardbeg 10 you are going to find An Oa more approachable as it’s lighter on the smoke.

The nose is sweet at first, with hints of honey, followed by mint and smoke.

On the palate, An Oa provides a good mouthfeel as it feels creamy. Flavor hits with pleasant smoke, that gives way to hints of mint and chocolate, along a meaty note that tastes like bacon.

The finish is long and pleasantly warm, with more bacon to it, smoke and a mineral note.

This whisky is smooth and quite drinkable despite a big and complex flavor. The finish is smooth and fresh and goes down nicely with no alcohol burn or peppery notes.

Overall, the Ardbeg An Oa is a more rounded and friendly dram than the 10 YO, but very lively and punchy nonetheless.

Is not an entry-level whisky to smoky Single Malt as peat is quite noticeable but makes a great choice for those who want peat in their pour but do not want to get overwhelmed.

There are a few facts worth knowing about An Oa:

  • Ardbeg An Oa, pronounced “an oh,” does not have an age statement, hence we assume that it was aged for at least 3 years.

  • Aging took place in Pedro-Ximenez sherry casks and ex-bourbon barrels and then vatted in a French-oak marrying vat. Pedro Ximénez is perhaps the sweetest wine we can find in the world.

  • Earned silver at the 2021 World Whiskey Awards.

  • SIlver at the 2019 International Wine & Spirits Competition.

The nose is a blast of smoke, with a heavy meaty note that smells like bacon. There’s also a iodine note typical of Islay whiskies.

On the palate, Uigeadail feels creamy providing a nice mouthfeel. Flavor brings heavy smoke and ash up-front, once you get that initial brick you get rewarded with ripe fruit, bitter chocolate and toasted barley.

The finish is long, bringing pleasing warmth, more smoke and pepper, along caramel and menthol.

This whisky is intense, full of smoke, with warm earthy notes, sherry sweetness and rich in minerality. The finish is long and pleasantly warm and peppery; it gets better with every sip.

If you want to tame it a bit and tune down the peaty notes add a few drops of water; that will allow sweetness to come forward.

Overall, Uigeadail is fantastic dram and the best Ardbeg Single Malt reserved for experienced whisky aficionados that can handle the rich peaty notes, a pleasant bite and the high proof as it was bottled at cask strength, meaning from the barrel and completely unadulterated.

Uigeadailpronounced “Oog-a-dal”, was named “Whisky of the Year” by the Whisky Bible in 2009, receiving 97.5 points out of 100. This is the highest grade ever given by Jim Murray; so you get an idea of how good it is.

Ardbeg An Oa vs Ardbeg Uigeadail: Which is better?

Uigeadail is an incredible whisky but extremely demanding

  • An Oa is far easier to sip and is also quite good and pleasant. It makes a great option as an “everyday whisky” for those who still like the presence of peat in their malt but in moderation.

  • Ardbeg Uigeadail is a great dram, but not something I would be drinking everyday but every now and then.

  • This is a high proof whisky bottled at cask strength with a very strong peat and ash presence that demands a certain mood and be experienced to fully enjoy.

  • If you are new to this type of whisky start with the An Oa before going full smoke with the Uigeadail.
