The nose provides a blast of rye spice at first, followed by hints of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg.

On the palate, the Bulleit Bourbon has a good texture. Flavor feels spicy on the first sip product of the high rye presence in the mash, but as you let it develop it becomes rich in dried fruit and tasty nutty notes.

There is some warmth on the finish yet pleasant, rich in spice, oak, with some sweet notes coming late to the party.

Bulleit is well rounded, sweet on the palate, with a strong spicy finish due to the large portion of rye used in the mash bill.

Spicier than the typical bourbon but smoother than a rye whiskey, making it a good option for those who want rye spice in moderation.

Bulleit Bourbon (Substitutes) makes a good sipper as you can drink it either neat or rocks and also mixes nicely in an Old Fashioned or Whiskey Sour as rye makes cocktails more interesting.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Bulleit Bourbon:

  • Mash bill is made from 68% corn, 28% rye and 4% malted barley.
  • It is made from pure Kentucky limestone-filtered water and locally sourced ingredients.
  • Bulleit ages for 6 years in charred American oak barrels.
  • Won Double Gold medal at the 2016 edition of the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
  • This brand was created in 1987 by Tom Bulleit, a former Four Roses employee, using his grandfather’s recipe.

Nose kicks-off with toasted oak, followed by orange peel, red fruit and maple syrup.

On the palate, the Eagle Rare shows a creamy body as the texture feels buttery. First sip is strong in oak, but as you let it develop vanilla, dried fruit, caramel and baking spice pop-up bringing good balance to the dram.

The finish is long, providing a bit of a bite, with more oak to it, along old leather and tobacco notes.

Adding water brings a bit more of caramel, tunes-down the finish, although it remains oaky.

Eagle Rare (Similar Bourbons) might not be the best bourbon for beginners as it’s a bit too oaky, but it has plenty to appreciate as it drinks quite nicely.

If this whisky were bottled at 100 proof it would be a killer but 90 suffices to deliver a nice drinking experience.

Definitely a keeper at MSRP ($50) but not good enough to pay a crazy price for it!

There are a few things worth knowing about Eagle Rare:

  • It ages for no less than 10 years in new, highly charred American oak barrels under the sun.
  • The barrels are hand-picked for quality and consistency before bottling.
  • The distillery does not disclose how the mash bill is comprised but I suspect it is using a generous amount of rye due to the rich spicy note this bourbon offers.
  • Eagle Rare is crafted at the Buffalo Trace Distillery and owned by the Sazerac Company currently holding other brands such as Pappy van Winkle, E.H. Taylor, Weller, Blanton’s and Buffalo Trace.

Eagle Rare is a multi-awarded bourbon:

  • Best Bourbon at the 2013 International Wine and Spirits Competition.
  • Gold Medal at the World Whisky Masters in 2017.
  • Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2017.
