On the nose you get an Apple Jolly Rancher blast followed by a bit of honey.

On the palate, there is more of that Jolly Rancher note, with sugar and rye spice that sits well as it brings some depth to this dram. It lacks in body as it feels syrupy, though.

The finish is short with more apple taste and a bit of spice coming late to the party trying to bring some balance to this heavily apple flavored dram.

Crown Royal Apple is definitely not the most complex pour as it basically smells and tastes like an Apple Jolly Rancher with a fair amount of spice, but is remarkably smooth as it drinks easy.

In summary, this is a liquid-form Jolly Rancher, super sweet, with a syrupy feel to it.

Personally, this is not my thing, but I know a few folks that find a guilty pleasure in apple flavored whiskeys. A little too sweet to drink them neat, yet become better when mixed in cocktails.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Crown Royal Apple:

  • This is a flavored whiskey made from the traditional Crown Royal Whisky and an apple liqueur.
  • Crown Royal uses a high portion of rye in the mash making it spicy.
  • Crown Royal is the biggest Canadian distiller and the best-selling Canadian Whisky in the United States.
  • Company was acquired by the British spirits giant, Diageo in 2000.

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Apple

FinishShort, caramel, oak char
Alcohol content70 proof (35% ABV)

The nose is Green Apple Jolly Rancher with no other note to appreciate.

On the palate, Jack Daniel’s Apple brings more Jolly Rancher flavor, along a big sugary hit making it overly sweet. There is tad of cinnamon coming behind that gets overwhelmed in the cloying sweetness.

The finish is short-lived, with more apple flavor, along caramel and just a tad of oak char trying to bring some balance. There is a bit of heat on the way down, but nothing severe.

Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Apple is a Jolly Rancher in a bottle. Overly sweet, with no balancing tasting notes. Good for a sip or two but it becomes cloying making a bad pour.

It gets better in cocktails, though. Add mineral water to make a highball or drown it in ginger-ale but definitely not something I recommend as a sipper.
