George Dickel is quite light on the nose offering a light maple hint.

On the palate it starts sweet with caramel and a hint of vanilla and mint; comes in with rye punch and mixed peppery spices in the middle fading to sweet maple.

The finish is short and sweet with a bit of a bite coming late to the party.

Dickel Rye is easy to approach as its flavor profile emphasizes the sweet over the spice.

Nice across the board although maybe lacking the level of complexity and impact of the very best of the style while providing good value for the money.

No wonder it was named Best Buy in 2019 by the Wine Enthusiast.

There are a few facts worth knowing about George Dickel Rye:

  • The mash bill is comprised of 95% rye and 5% malted barley.
  • Aged for 5 years in new, charred American oak.
  • George Dickel Rye was filtered through sugar-maple charcoal before bottling.

The nose has the typical artificial banana note of Jack Daniel’s, along mint, caramel, vanilla and a bit of medicinal alcohol.

On the palate, the Jack Rye is surprisingly smooth, low in rye spice, is round and malty, with some coffee roast, oak, caramel and the mint note typical of rye whiskey.

The finish is smooth, with very little to no burn, with a faint peppery note and a touch of mint.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the Jack Daniel’s Rye, I was not expecting much from it but it turns out to be a nice sipper that goes down nicely despite bottled at 90 proof.

It’s quite smooth, unexpectedly complex and entirely drinkable.

It drinks nicely on the rocks, although I feel it lacks the heat to make tasty cocktails as I like stronger whiskeys to make cocktails.

The Jack Daniel’s Rye is better than the classic No. 7 and attractively priced making a good option.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Jack Daniel’s Rye:

  • Mash bill is comprised of 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley.
  • It does not have an age statement but is aged between 4 and 5 years.
  • The Jack Daniel’s Rye goes through the same charcoal-filtering process as the No. 7 which takes from 3 to 5 days to get completed.

What do George Dickel Rye and Jack Daniel’s Rye have in common?

Both whiskeys are crafted in the state of Tennessee and are subjected to filtration through charcoal before bottling.

The different is that Jack Daniel’s filters the whiskey continuously through 10-feet of sugar maple charcoal while George DIckel places the distillate in a vat along charcoal and allows to sit for a few days before it is drained.
