The nose has the typical artificial banana note of Jack Daniel’s, along mint, caramel, vanilla and a bit of medicinal alcohol.

On the palate, the Jack Rye is surprisingly smooth, low in rye spice, is round and malty, with some coffee roast, oak, caramel and the mint note typical of rye whiskey.

The finish is smooth, with very little to no burn, with a faint peppery note.

I’m pleasantly surprised by the Jack Daniel’s Rye, I was not expecting much from it but it turns out to be a nice sipper that goes down nicely despite bottled at 90 proof.

It’s quite smooth, unexpectedly complex and entirely drinkable.

It drinks nicely on the rocks, although I feel it lacks the heat to make tasty cocktails as I like stronger whiskeys to make cocktails.

The Jack Daniel’s Rye is better than the regular and attractively priced making a good option.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Jack Daniel’s Rye:

  • Mash bill is comprised of 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley.
  • It does not have an age statement but is aged between 4 and 5 years.
  • The Jack Daniel’s Rye goes through the same charcoal-filtering process as the No. 7 which takes from 3 to 5 days to get completed.

Jim Beam Rye

NoseRye spice, black pepper, cherry
PalateRye spice, licorice, mint, caramel
FinishWarm, spice, vanilla
Alcohol content90 proof (45% ABV)
How to drinkRocks, cocktails
Similar toJim Beam Bourbon, Bulleit Rye

The nose is a blast of rye spice and black pepper, as you let it develop a faint cherry note appears.

On the palate, the Jim Beam Rye offers a thin body and kicks-off with more rye spice, followed by hints of mint and licorice, along a bit of caramel sweetness.

The finish is short-lived, warm with hints of cinnamon, oak spice and black pepper making it quite spicy.

If I had to summarize the Jim Beam Rye in a few words I would say: “It tastes like a spicy Jim Beam White Label“, which in turn is not the best sip.

Definitely not a sipping whiskey and would rather choose other options before this when looking for an affordable mixer.

Too peppery and somewhat harsh with better options at this price point.

There are a few facts worth knowing about the Jim Beam Rye:

  • Jim Beam claims that this whiskey is crafted using an old Pre-Prohibition recipe, although they don’t disclose much information about it or about how the mash bill is comprised.
  • Does not have an statement but it was aged for around 4 years in American oak barrels.

  • The Jack Daniel’s Rye is a pleasant surprise as it drinks quite nicely making a good sipper and a better drinker than the Jim Beam Rye.
  • This is a smooth and sweet whiskey, low in spice, with very little burn. This is an upgrade over the Old No. 7 which is not a great achievement but is good nonetheless.
  • Drinks easy on the rocks and can be used in cocktails although it lacks the right profile to make tasty cocktails making me prefer whiskeys like the Old Forester Rye.
