There is a pleasant smoky note on the finish, full of toasted barley and caramel.

This is a smooth and satisfying whisky, with a subtle amount of smoke making it an easy drinker when compared to Islay Whiskies, but more complex and interesting than the typical Speyside Whisky.

Perhaps a bit pricey for a 10 YO when you can buy a similar whisky like the Benromach which is just as good at a steep discount.

Springbank is a Campbeltown Scotch, once a major producer of Whisky with as many as 30 functioning distilleries. Unfortunately, most of the distilleries have gone out of business with only 3 left.

Springbank dates back to 1828 and remains a family-owned business. The entire production is handled on site including floor malting the barley, aging, and bottling making it unique in Scotland.

  • Bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV).

  • Aged for 10 years using a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.

  • Springbank dries the malted barley with just 6 hours of peat smoke and 30 hours of hot air.

  • Distilled 2.5 times.

  • Springbank is completely legit as it does not use caramel-coloring.

  • This is a non chill-filtered whisky.

  • Palate: Smoke, tobacco, coffee and bacon.
  • Finish: Looong, caramel, smoke.

Nose is full of smoke, ash and coal but mellows out into a rich caramel scent as you let it develop in the glass.

On the palate, this malt provides a thick creamy body. Flavor brings a blast of smoke, along notes of tobacco, espresso coffee and a meaty bacon note.

Everything is nicely balanced against caramel notes making it remarkably good.

The finish is long and warming, with smoke, sweet caramel and a dash of black pepper.

Ardbeg is a whisky made for seasoned peat and smoke lovers.

This whisky is complex and delicioussmooth and well-rounded, rich in caramel and smoke, along mineral and sweet notes. This is one of the best malts for smoke enthusiasts.

Few whiskies are as full and rich in peat and smoke than the Ardbeg. If you are new to this type of whisky you might find it overwhelming hence don’t expect to like it as much as I do on the first date.

Whiskies of this type are an acquired taste that demand practice to be fully enjoyed. Once you come to terms with it you will find a hard time enjoying traditional Scotch whiskies.

If you feel overwhelmed by the Ardbeg 10 add a few drops of water releasing sweet and floral notes making it easier to drink.

  • Both are quite good but with contrasting flavor profiles.

  • Ardbeg 10 is BBQ on glass, heavy on the smoke, with meaty bacon notes making quite good but more demanding.

  • Springbank is a smooth, easy drinker, light on the smoke and a better choice for those who just want a touch of smoke in their dram.

Personally, I prefer the Ardbeg as I’m quite fond of smoke and meaty notes, but this whisky requires a more determined drinker to fully enjoy its overly complex profile.
