Nose is full of smoke, ash and coal but mellows out into a rich caramel scent as you let it develop in the glass.

On the palate, Ardbeg provides a incredibly thick creamy body. Flavor brings strong smoke presence, along notes of tobacco, espresso coffee and a meaty note that tastes like bacon.

Everything is nicely balanced against caramel notes making it remarkably good.

The finish is long and warming, with the smoke, sweet caramel and a dash of black pepper.

Is it good?

Ardbeg 10 is a whisky made for seasoned peat and smoke lovers.

This whisky is complex and delicioussmooth and well-rounded, rich in caramel and smoke, along mineral and sweet notes. This is one of the best malts for smoke enthusiasts.

Few whiskies are as full and rich in peat and smoke than the Ardbeg 10. If you are new to this type of whisky you might find it overwhelming hence don’t expect to like it as much as I do on the first date.

Whiskies of this type are an acquired taste that demand practice to be fully enjoyed. Once you come to terms with it you will find a hard time enjoying traditional Scotch whiskies.

If you feel overwhelmed by the Ardbeg add a few drops of water releasing sweet and floral notes making it easier to drink.

The nose is a blast of smoke, with a heavy meaty note that smells like bacon. There’s also a iodine note typical of Islay whiskies.

On the palate, Uigeadail feels creamy providing a nice mouthfeel. Flavor brings heavy smoke and ash up-front, once you get that initial brick you get rewarded with ripe fruit, bitter chocolate and toasted barley.

The finish is long, bringing pleasing warmth, more smoke and pepper, along caramel and menthol.

Is it good?

This whisky is intense, full of smoke, with warm earthy notes, sherry sweetness and rich in minerality. The finish is long and pleasantly warm and peppery; it gets better with every sip.

If you want to tame it a bit and tune down the peaty notes add a few drops of water; that will allow sweetness to come forward.

Overall, Uigeadail is fantastic dram and the best Ardbeg reserved for experienced whisky aficionados that can handle the rich peaty notes, a pleasant bite and the high proof as it was bottled at cask strength, meaning from the barrel and completely unadulterated.

Uigeadail, pronounced “Oog-a-dal”, was named “Whisky of the Year” by the Whisky Bible in 2009, receiving 97.5 points out of 100. This is the highest grade ever given by Jim Murray; so you get an idea of how good it is.

Uigeadail is the best Ardbeg Whisky but it’s quite demanding

  • If you are new to this type of whisky or are not into intense flavors you are unlikely to like the Ardbeg 10 and much less the Uigeadail.
  • Ardbeg 10 is full of peat and ash along some very good tasting notes. The peaty note is still manageable.
  • The Ardbeg Uigeadail is an intense and delicious high-proof peaty-monster. Once you go through an initial thick layer or peat, smoke and ash you will be rewarded with a dram that strikes a great balance between sweetness and minerality.
  • Uigeadail is an incredible dram but you have to be quite well-traveled to fully enjoy it.
